Gender Identity Policy

At The Man In The Moon, we are committed to creating an inclusive and safe environment where every individual feels respected and valued. This policy outlines our approach to understanding and respecting individuals' identities, including gender identity and the use of names and pronouns.

Respect for Gender Identity

• Confidentiality: We respect a young person's gender identity as an important aspect of their personal identity. If a child wishes to keep their gender identity confidential from parents/carers, we will respect their confidentiality.

• Transgender/Non-Binary Recognition: If a member/crew member comes out as transgender or non-binary, or requests the use of an alternative name or pronoun, we will respectfully affirm their identity.

Procedure for Name and Pronoun Use

When a member/crew member requests the use of a different name or pronoun, we will follow these steps:

1. Name Use:

   • We will ask which name the individual would like us to use.

   • Clarify where they would like their affirmed name to be used: during workshops/rehearsals, when contacting home or family, and with other adults.

2. Pronoun Use:

   • We will ask which pronouns (e.g., they/she/he) the individual uses.

   • Clarify where they would like their affirmed pronouns to be used: during workshops/rehearsals, when contacting home or family, and with other adults.

3. Support Offered:

   • Inquire if there are any additional ways we can support the individual regarding their identity.

Implementation and Awareness

​

• Respectful Practices: While we strive to affirm individuals' identities, we acknowledge that mistakes can happen. We will make every effort to use the affirmed name and pronouns correctly.

• Correction of Errors: If an incorrect name or pronoun is used:

  • Apologise promptly.

  • Correct ourselves immediately.

  • Be mindful to use the affirmed name and pronouns in the future.

• Group Settings: If we notice someone using an incorrect name or pronoun in a group setting, we will quietly correct or remind them to ensure respectful communication.
